Multi-Platform CD-ROM
Platform independent CD-ROMs are essential if one wants the contents
to have some longevity in a fast changing technological context. What
is the point of buying an expensive art CD-ROM, about the same price
as an art book, if five years from now you can no longer look at it.
Another issue is that if all CD-ROM are intended for a single
platform, then it will naturally stick to the most popular one,
preventing (through what economist call network externalities) other
platforms, even technologically superior to compete freely on the
market, for lack of CD-ROMs and other contents. This is typically the
case for free software platforms.
This page is devoted to documents on that topic, as well as
ressources, commercial or other, for the production of platform
independant CD-ROM.
