Oracle Encourages Dot-Coms to Move to Linux

Oracle Corp will use the first day of the LinuxWorld show in
New York today to announce the availability of its dot-com
software suite on the free operating system. Like the standard
version of the suite, launched last Fall, Oracle's John Magee,
director of internet platform marketing, told ComputerWire the
offering will include the company's flagship Oracle8i database
plus the first- time Linux support of Oracle Application Server
(which includes support for Sun Microsystems Inc's new J2EE
standard), version 2.2 of Oracle's WebDB for rapid portal
development and release 3.0 of JDeveloper.

To date, Oracle claims that over 150 new dot-com businesses
have been created using its dot-com suite. Furthermore, the
company says that over 50% of 8i downloads from its OTN are on
Linux, outpacing downloads of the database on Windows NT. In
addition, 75% of Oracle Application Server downloads from OTN
are on Linux, it said. Pricing starts at $6,767 and the dot-com
suite is available worldwide. The move marks Oracle's push to
make all its platform software available on the Linux OS. To
date, none of its applications are yet compatible with the free
OS however, but Magee said Linux versions of the ERP software
will be available later this year.
